Behind the boards
Apple Music's credits name one producer: frontman Sam Nelson Harris. The songwriters are Sam Nelson Harris, Casey Harris, Adam Levin and Russ Flynn. On the performance side, Sam sings lead, Levin plays drums, Casey plays piano, and Flynn and Malay Ho play electric guitar.
Harris directed the video as well, per the YouTube description, with Aubree Estrella as editor and camera operator.
Producing isn't new for him. Per FLG's release, Harris has worked as a songwriter and producer for D4VD, 21 Savage, Rihanna, Lizzo, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, SZA and Maren Morris.
How the song started
Harris laid out the origin story in the release. "Y.O.T.H was written at the beginning of the year, as we were in the last stages of writing for our new album," he said. "We were all crammed into a small Airbnb in Nashville, and the instrumental came together as a last-ditch effort to come up with something before everyone called it a night before our flights home the next morning."
The words came later, and the chorus came first: "can you hear King David's chord?"
He also explained the theme. "It's a song about possibility, about learning to embrace the waves that are coming to hit you. It's a song about change. The beauty and the terror and everything in between."
And he had a joke about the timing, since the song lands near the end of the year it's named for: "as a new dad, I'm learning to be okay being late to everything now."
Where the band is now
Per the release, 2025 brought VHS(X), a reimagined take on their debut VHS for its 10th anniversary. Brothers Sam Nelson Harris and Casey Harris started the band in high school in Ithaca, New York, and drummer Adam Levin joined after they moved to Brooklyn. The release lists one upcoming show, PixieRock III in Plant City, Florida, on November 7.
My read
This is a five-minute single (Apple clocks it at 5:00), built from a late-night instrumental in a rented room and produced in-house by the singer. For a label debut, that's a vote of confidence in the band's own instincts. Harris kept both the sound and the picture in his hands.
