Who Is Kuzi Cee? The Calgary R&B Singer Behind 'Frequency'

Kuzi Cee wanted "Frequency" to carry everything he loves about 2000s R&B, right down to the key change.

Kuzi Cee released "Frequency" on October 16 through Universal Music Canada, and the label frames it as "an early glimpse at the next phase of his artistry." If the name is new to you, here is who he is, where he comes from, and what he has said about the song.

Where Kuzi Cee comes from

The label's bio calls him a "Zimbabwe-born, Calgary-based R&B singer-songwriter," shaped by "a global upbringing across New York, London, Toronto and Calgary," per Universal Music Canada. Rolling Stone Canada tells the same story, describing him as raised across London, New York and Toronto "before eventually settling in Calgary."

He has been open about what that city means for an R&B singer. "Calgary has seen a lot of success in folk, pop, and country, so it's not always easy to pull people's attention away from those legends and get them to take a chance on my music and on R&B as a whole," he told Rolling Stone Canada.

'Rather Be' and the year that followed

His breakout single was "Rather Be." According to Universal Music Canada, it reached #16 at Canadian Top 40 radio, "helping introduce Kuzi to a growing national audience."

Rolling Stone Canada says the song first caught attention online through early snippets, and that he signed with Universal Music Canada in 2026. The magazine named him to its Future of Music 2026 list and reports he has shared stages with Mario, Nelly and Ashanti.

The live résumé keeps growing. The label lists 2026 performances at the FIFA Fan Festival, Calgary Stampede and KDays, after earlier appearances at SXSW and The Great Escape, per Universal Music Canada.

What 'Frequency' is about

"Frequency" was produced by Aeon Wang and mixed by Teezio, whom the label describes as a "Grammy Award-winning engineer," per Universal Music Canada. The label says the song is "centred on chemistry, attraction and two people fully in sync."

Kuzi Cee explains the idea himself in the release: "'Frequency' carries so much nostalgia for me. I wanted to make a record that encompasses everything I love about 2000s R&B: the drums, the catchy hook and, of course, A BRIDGE WITH A KEY CHANGE!"

He keeps the summary short. "At its core, the song is really simple: tonight I want you and everything about you," he says in the same release.

The family test has gone well, by his account. "I come from a very R&B-loving family, and since I made this song, anytime I go home or we have a family function, it's the first request for the party," he says, per Universal Music Canada.

How he sees his lane

In the Rolling Stone Canada Q&A, he put his place in the genre plainly: "I like to think I'm carving out my own lane in the R&B space with the yearners, the lovers, and the 'wear your heart on your sleeve' types."

He also named the artists he sees leading it. "Artists like Leon Thomas and Kehlani each have their own way of telling their stories, which inspires millions," he told the magazine.

Singles now, an album later

For now, the plan is one song at a time. "I have hopes of doing that one day, but for now, I want to stay consistent with releases and continue building out my artist world before taking that on," he told Rolling Stone Canada about a full-length project. "For now, let's keep the singles pushing."

That is a different bet from the one SZA made with SOS, an album that spent 53 weeks in the top ten. It is closer to the long build that took Victoria Monét from a decade of writing for other artists to a Best New Artist win.

He is also an album listener, he says, and wants to "really take the time to build out the music and then tell that story in a longer form" when the moment comes. Until then, "Frequency" is the latest chapter, and the place to start is the bridge he was so excited about.
