Taylor Swift Co-Produced 'Patient Zero' With Max Martin and Shellback
Who produced Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero"? The short answer is Swift herself, with Max Martin and Shellback. The same three people wrote it, and the credits behind them are worth a closer look.
"Patient Zero" is the first of four new songs on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition of Swift's 2025 album, which arrived September 25, 2026. The song is out on Republic Records, per Billboard, and also came out as a single. It went straight to the top. Billboard reported that it debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 as Swift's 16th career No. 1, ending the record 24-week run of Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas."

The producers: Swift, Max Martin and Shellback
Apple Music's song credits list three producers: Taylor Swift, Max Martin and Shellback. The same three names sit under Composition and Lyrics, each credited as songwriter. Album of the Year carries the same producer and songwriter lines.
Billboard put it plainly: "Swift cowrote and coproduced 'Patient Zero' with Max Martin and Shellback." That matters for the record books. Per Billboard, Swift has now co-written all 16 of her Hot 100 No. 1s and co-produced 10 of them.
Martin and Shellback did more than sit behind the desk. Apple credits Martin with programming, keyboards and piano, and Shellback with programming, keyboards and drums. Both also get recording engineer credits, alongside Lasse Mårtén.
How the song came together
Swift explained the origin when she announced The Encore. "I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album," she wrote, in a statement Pitchfork published in full. "Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs."
So this isn't a vault track or a leftover. It's new music from the team that made the original Showgirl, written after the fact.
The players: violin, mandolin, pedal steel
Here's where the credits get interesting. Apple lists three session players beyond the producers:
- Fredrik Burstedt on violin
- Anders Pettersson on pedal steel guitar and mandolin
- Andreas Wiberg on acoustic guitar
That violin is the hook. Writing in Slate, Chris Molanphy called it "a Celtic-style fiddle tune, played by Scandinavian conductor and soloist Fredrik Burstedt, that anchors and cycles throughout the song." He heard Swift and her producers adding "pinging synth drums and warm keyboards" on top, with mandolin and pedal steel "buried deep in the mix." His verdict on the part: "The violin hook is admirably unusual for a 2020s chart-topper."
I agree with him on that. A violinist, a mandolin player and a pedal steel player on a Max Martin and Shellback production is exactly the kind of credit sheet I like reading.
Mix, master and engineering
The finishing crew is a familiar one. Apple's credits name Serban Ghenea as mixing engineer with Bryce Bordone as assistant mixing engineer, Randy Merrill as mastering engineer, and John Hanes as immersive mixing engineer.
What the No. 1 adds to the producers' totals
This is the stat sheet credits nerds came for. According to Billboard, Martin picked up his 31st Hot 100 No. 1 as a songwriter, trailing only Paul McCartney's 32, and his record-extending 29th No. 1 as a producer. Shellback scored his 13th Hot 100 No. 1 as a writer and his 12th as a producer.
The trio has done this before. Billboard notes that Swift, Martin and Shellback also co-wrote the three Hot 100 No. 1s from 1989, which Martin and Shellback co-produced. Their first No. 1 as a writing trio was "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," which Martin and Shellback co-produced with Dann Huff.
Three weeks at No. 1
"Patient Zero" held the top spot for three straight weeks. Billboard reported that it led the Hot 100 for a third consecutive week on the chart dated October 24. That week's tally was helped by the arrival of acoustic and piano versions and a 7-inch vinyl sold in Swift's webstore, per Billboard. On the chart dated October 31, Billboard reported that the song fell four spots to No. 5 as Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas" returned to No. 1. Billboard added that "Patient Zero" was still the top-selling song of the week overall.
The song's video, directed by Swift and starring Swift, Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, premiered September 27 during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Billboard noted.
My read: the headline fact here is that Swift's name sits in the producer column, not just the writer column. Ten of her 16 No. 1s carry a co-production credit now. The violin gets the attention, but the credit line is the real story.
