Young M.A – “HERstory In The Making” Review

Album Artwork

Young M.A has already released a smash single with 2016’s “OOOUUU” and flexes her lyrical muscles with every freestyle that she destroys. As a result, fans have been anxious to get a project from the Brooklynite and that time has come with the release of HERstory In The Making.

We all know that Young M.A is one of the best in the game, regardless of gender. The doubts begin with many questioning her ability to construct a full body of work showcasing song making ability and versatility. Let’s get into the album below.

“HERstory In The Making”

HERstory In The Making is M.A’s third project, with a brief since 2017’s Herstory. Loaded with 21 tracks, HERstory In The Making is a long album fighting to prosper in the days of streaming. Fans can’t help but factor in that more albums drop on Friday than chicken gets served at an HBCU on a Wednesday.

M.A shows balance throughout this autobiographical album, switching between hardcore records like “No Mercy (Intro)” and “Da Come Up” to tracks that will ring off in the club such as “She Like, I’m Like”, “BIG”, and “PettyWap”. She shed the bravado and delivered introspective cuts dealing with trauma, depression and heartbreak like “No Love”, “Stubborn Ass”, & “Sober Thoughts”.

Although M.A was able to show a range of abilities throughout the album, the project has far too many throwaway tracks, such as “Kold World”, that are kind of just there. Tracks like these watered down an album that had the potential to be a really good memoir of who Young M.A is.

Despite these shortcomings, Young M.A is an elite lyricist with a quality ear. Her fan-base likely won’t diminish after this. The only question is will she be able to deliver a full-length album worth listening to in the future? I think M.A answered that call on HERstory In The Making. Check out her body of work below.
