What a memorable night for the LOX and the Diplomats aka Dipset — The infamous Verzuz battle hosted in New York City on August 3, at Madison Square Garden Hulu Theater. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you know that the Verzuz battle was founded by Timbaland and Swizz Beats while the world was quarantined for COVID-19. It was created as a way for people to still enjoy performances and live music from some of our favorite artists.
In the ring, we had Jim Jones, Cam’Ron, Juelz Santana and Feekey Zekey of the Diplomats (a.k.a Dipset) battling The Lox, comprised of Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch. The battle’s winner was crystal clear, as Jada and crew spit bars authentically and in unison. Therefore, their stage presence and performance were highlighted with moments of acapella verses, breath control, smack talk, and competitive love.
Dipset had plenty of bangers to offer the tight crowd and everyone watching at home. However, there was a mild lack of engagement as most of the songs and words were being played by the DJ rather than rapped over an instrumental by the artists themselves like their competitors; familiar in hip-hop battles from back in the day. Jadakiss took time to ask the crowd, “New York, why these ni—s keep rhyming over the words? Y’all could have stayed in the car and listened to Apple Music for that!” Safe to say, the people expected a little more, lyrically, from Dipset than what was delivered on the exciting August night.
The LOX Understood The Assignment
Reminiscing on a few comical moments, Cam’Ron started the battle saying “Y’all not even at home [New York], yall go first. Y’all not at home, we [Dipset] at home!” Jada responded saying, “Hold on New York! Cam, you live in Miami! Drop that sh** Tech!” The LOX set the battle off with their song, ‘F–k You‘ — Talk about setting a tone! There is also a clip circulating the internet of Jim Jones falling off the stage. Moreover, this was a must-see event. There were some moments where we didn’t know which way things were going to go, like when Jada snatched Juelz Santana’s bandana off his head after Juelz bombarded Jada and Styles P mid-battle. Yikes!
Nonetheless, a night of history was made. Moreover, a night that served authentic Hip-Hop and a heavy ambiance of New York energy. The LOX can confidently hold a W for this Verzuz battle.
