If you’re involved in the industry in any way, then you understand that there’s levels to this! For instance, a manager is essential for an artist’s progression from one level to the next. Masta Johnson, a San Antonio-based entrepreneur, music manager, and marketing genius, has been serving excellence in that position for as long as we can remember. Now, for the last two years, Masta has been utilizing his expertise for San Antonio-based rapper Boss Tripp4Tre. Since taking the reins, Tripp’s career has shot off like a rocket under Johnson’s direction.
The Industry’s Go-To Artist Manager
As the industry plug, he continues to make the right connections as a manager and consultant to a variety of other artists and record labels. Johnson is also involved in a number of other investments. Johnson, like entertainment moguls Russell Simmons, Diddy, and Jermaine Dupri, has expanded his platform into fashion, film, TV, and even media. In fact, he co-owns his own clothing line Bossed Up Productions with his blood brother, Boss Tripp4Tre. His hustle and talents have created a rewarding lifestyle for not only Johnson but his clients as well.
“My main goal has always been about legally making my own money… Even as a kid, I was focused on getting paid. But, I didn’t want to go the same route as all the drug dealers I came up around. I hung around them and learned from them, though. I learned how to hustle, work ethics and the importance of making solid connections. At the time, I didn’t know I was picking up on the business skills that would help me today.”

San Antonio-based Masta by way of Cleveland, Ohio, has been in the business for as long as he can remember. Growing up in the city’s drug-infested neighborhoods, his ultimate goal has always been to get his hands on money. As Masta thinks back, he goes on to say:
“I took a liking to the drug dealers not for being drug dealers but for being cool and being business minded. Also, I wasn’t trying to be like them. I never sold drugs. They wouldn’t let me. In fact, they used to tell me that wasn’t the life I wanted. They were like ‘I see you. You’re a cool cat, but I don’t want this for you.”

In order to put money in his pocket, Masta raked leaves, cut grass, and did any odd job he could. As a result, those mediocre jobs funded the passion.
The Masta Johnson Magic
Masta was teetering in the music business when he wasn’t on a paper chase. He would occasionally sit in on aspiring local artists’ studio sessions, learning a little bit at a time. Eventually he came across a local artist who had a home studio. The newfound collaboration allowed Masta to hone his craft. Masta would come over and make beats and record songs.
“At that time, I knew I wanted to do something with music,I just didn’t know what I wanted to do.” Masta divulges.
In addition to the studio, the gentleman had a store. Because of this, Masta, who has always had an eye for fashion, designed some t-shirts and sold them in the store.
“That’s when I first learned about branding and marketing…” Masta says.
He continued to experiment with music and his clothing line over the years. But, it wasn’t until his senior year of high school that he realized his true potential. Additionally, he wrote a poem for a classmate to perform at a school talent show, but when she didn’t like it – Masta turned it into a song, sang it himself, and won first place.

Bossed Up Productions
Following his high school graduation, he went on to earn an Associate degree in business administration. Over the years, he continued to soak in as much information as possible. In 2014, Masta founded Bossed Up Productions. Then in 2018, he officially incorporated the company with his brother Tripp.
Shortly after, they were looking for the right artist to sponsor and promote the brand together. Now they need to look no further. Since the release of Tripp’s 2020 breakout single “Making A Way”, both Bossed Up Promotions and Tripp’s music career have grown.
“My goal is for the artist to be happy with the music that they are making and know that they can come to me if they have any issues with their music career. I want them to succeed in their career. And I’m going to do whatever it is to help them succeed
