Gunna channels a different side of himself in his highly anticipated sophomore album, Wunna. It’s no secret that astrology has become a part of mainstream culture, and with this project, Gunna pulls inspiration from this movement by seizing the opportunity to show his Gemini traits. Since his native sign is known for their split personalities, the album is titled after his alter ego.
Wunna feels as if the Atlanta rapper is stepping into a new era. In an interview with Highsnobiety, Gunna explains how his alter ego allows him to show versatility as a creative. “Wunna is the other side of me that I don’t really be showing. I made more than an album, I made a series with it,” he states. “Even with the cover, the videos, with the merch and everything, it goes together. I want people to understand that I’m a real artist.”
In conjunction with the album release is a two-part documentary that gives fans a candid look inside the rapper’s life and the process behind creating the project.
The 18-track album features rap heavyweights Roddy Rich and Travis Scott as well as cameos from frequent collaborators Young Thug and Lil Baby. Honorable mentions include producers Wheezy and Turbo, whose production credits are shared throughout the project.
From the stories of his rise to the top to his current lavish spending habits, Gunna’s signature laid-back flow against futuristic big room trap sounds shows that Wunna has bought the Atlanta rapper into a new element. Within a week of the album’s release, it has already charted to number one on Billboard 200. With all of that success, we get the feeling that the world is going to see more of Gunna’s split personality in the near future.
