New York has given birth to some of the most legendary rappers in Hip-Hop, and it seems unlikely that those days are over. Born and raised in the Boogie Down Bronx, rising rapper, LondonHill is ready to take the world by storm. With the rise of viral female rap, London is headstrong on taking her place in the industry.
Behind the buzz she’s generated, the 23 year old is just a creative, outspoken girl fulfilling her dreams as an artist, with an impeccable flow that sets her apart from other female rappers.
I had the opportunity to speak with London about her journey, inspiration, and plans for the future. The outspoken artist gets personal and draws us into her world, check out our interview below.
How did the name LondonHill come about?
I was always obsessed with the artist Lauryn Hill and the Spice Girls so I took the last name from Lauryn Hill, and you know the Spice Girls had London on lock. I’m obsessed with that group so I took the London thing from them and put it together, London Hill.
How did you get into rap?
Actually, I first starting singing at the age of 15 and I used to play around with it so much. I never took it seriously until my mom was on my ass, she prepared me for this lifestyle, I just wasn’t ready till now.
When did you write your first song?
I wrote my first song on December 7th 2017, called “Demolish” . I drew my inspiration from Nicki’s “Dungeon Dragon.”
What has been the greatest hill you’ve climbed in your career thus far?
Breaking out of my shy shell and showing my unique artist side. I’m excited that I’m now brave enough to share it with the world.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
Ms. Foxy Brown! I love her to death. I admire her flow, her aura, the way she dressed, her fearless actions. She defines me, she was so raw, and gutta, and bossy. She didn’t care what anyone had to say about her, she stayed true to who she was. She motivates me to be that dark-skinned Christian Dior poster girl lol.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is gutta, raw, loud, and aggressive.
What are some of your favorite projects you’ve done?
I’m currently working on my very first Ep called “Trip 2 London” it’s going to be very fun, exciting and a turn up for the culture.
Tell us a little bit about your creative process, do you have one?
I always have to have a bottle of smart water and a pack of nerds next to me before I start writing. Those are like my drugs to get in my creative mode. Besides that, on a daily basis, whatever comes to mind that sounds hot, I jot it down in my notes on my phone. I could be at the mall, store, laundry, it doesn’t matter. Sometimes when I’m joking around and it sounds hot, I’ll keep it in mind and make a song out of it.
I like to say we’re in this era of female rap, from Rico Nasty, Cardi B, Megan thee Stallion, and City Girls, to name a few. What do you think their impact is having on the industry and the culture overall?
I love what they’re all doing. They’re holding their grounds as female artists because it isn’t easy for us in this industry. They’re all strong talented people who know what they want, didn’t give up, and are getting theirs, period. It’s amazing and it’s so many more females like myself that are about to cause a storm.
If you weren’t into music, what would you be pursuing?
A fashion line. I always wanted to be a fashion designer. And I don’t mean getting a dollar shirt and printing a logo on it. I always wanted to make my clothes from scratch.
Got any major plans for the year? Any bangers we should be expecting in the near future?
My biggest goal this year is to get my music not only local but to international ears. I have so many hits up my sleeves and the beast will release them soon so listen out for LondonHilll.
