Rising alternative R&B artist Gatsby returns with the official music video for his trendy track titled, “Ghost“. The record opens up with ambient synths and a background vocal, followed by a crisp kick drum and snares. Gatsby follows up his vocal hooks with nostalgic lyrics and hushed whispers about meeting someone else.
Shortly after, the track transitions into high gear, with louder, more melodic singing about attempting to move on. This is when we realize what the “Ghost” in the title refers to the act of ghosting; (i.e, not responding to messages). Gatsby is venting his frustration at being ghosted, which everyone has experienced once in their life.
Gatsby’s Musical Influence Shine Through His Music
Gatsby’s influences include Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, and Bruno Mars, to name a few. In a previous interview, he stated that Michael Jackson is his favorite artist of all time. His musical passion comes from growing up with his father who was a radio DJ. Who played a variety of genres including funk, soul, and house music. So he was constantly surrounded by music. He’s not shy about his love of pop. But this song has more alternative R&B leanings. In fact, it would appeal mostly to fans of Frank Ocean and Tyler the Creator. However, unlike Frank Ocean, this track is more about the simple, repetitive, and catchy vocal hooks rather than the vocal gymnastics. And, unlike Tyler the Creator, it’s more concerned with capturing the essence of a pop song. Rather than with expensive and flashy production.
In addition to the single, there’s also an accompanying official music video to go with it. The visual does an excellent job of bringing the lyrics to life. Throughout the video, Gatsby reflects on the times he spent with a woman who eventually ghosted him, leaving him with conflicted emotions. Additionally, the fresh new release is being distributed through 300 Entertainment’s new platform called Sparta. If you haven’t already, get familiar with Gatsby.
