Just a kid in West London who was trying to make it, and that he did. Rhys Angelo Emile Herbert, also known as Digga D, is becoming one of the best young multifaceted artists in the British entertainment industry. Born in Ladbroke Grove on June 29, 2000, Digga D’s musical journey kicked off at merely 12 years of age. During adolescence he was consistently spending his free time writing new music, experimenting. He enjoyed a blend of genres. Everything from dancehall and rap to Jamaican reggae would serve as catalysts for future work.
Over a decade later, Digga’s reached heights he couldn’t have dreamed of. From charting at #1 for UK Albums to cutting records with Stormzy, it’s safe to safe Digga is having a global impact. In the UK alone, Digga’s first three mixtapes hit #11, #3, and #1 respectively. GQ called him the UK’s most influential rapper. Digga gained such accolades with popular tracks including ‘Kill Confirmed,’ ‘Who?’, ‘Woi’, ‘2k17’, and more.
Digga D’s success didn’t come without costs. In fact, it nearly cost him his life.
In 2018, the Metropolitan Police would give Digga and his group a CBO. Unknown to many listeners outside the UK, a CBO, or Criminal Behavioral Order, is a mandate placed down to limiting the groups ability to write, create, or distribute music without the approval of the Police. Digga would be incarcerated in 2019, and 2020 for breaking ‘conditions of his CBO’ and would be sentenced to over 2 years of prison time. This order was widely condemned by censorship groups across Europe and worldwide. “People view me as an animal,” stated Digga D in a BBC documentary about the experiences.
The roadblocks didn’t stop there. While serving time in prison, Digga was stabbed in the eyes by fellow inmates. The attack cost him his his eye and he’s purportedly (and understandably) dealt with PTSD since the incident.
After being released in 2022, Digga hasn’t been back inside. He’s made it clear that he is using his pain as motivation moving forward. Not many artists faced censorship like Digga did. No one has had the success given the limitations.
Digga latest project, Back To Square One, released in August of this year. The mixtape features artists Potter Payper and M Huncho.
