Chloe Qisha Releases Fantasize Mixtape With "He Likes Boys"
Chloe Qisha released her mixtape Fantasize on Oct. 30, out now via Columbia (UK) and RCA (USA), per RCA's release. Its final single, "He Likes Boys," debuted on Zane Lowe's Apple Music show on Oct. 26 and arrived with a music video.
Per the release, the mixtape weaves "funk and disco influences from across the decades," while staying "firmly rooted in contemporary pop." The release also quotes the Observer on "The Malaysia-born singer's sultry, ironic disco pop."
What she says Fantasize is
"'Fantasize' is my odyssey through the last year and a half of my life," Chloe Qisha says in the release, adding that "each track is like a diary entry." Later she says, "For all its silliness and outrageousness, this is probably the most honest I've ever been in my music."
Apple Music lists Fantasize at nine tracks, opening with "YDH" and closing with the title track. Five earlier singles sit inside it: "YDH," "Question Of The Day," "Baby Girl," "Surprise Surprise" and "So Sad So Hot," with "He Likes Boys" in the middle.
Per the release, her collaborators include longtime partner Rob Milton, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Caroline Ailin, Oscar Görres, Steph Jones and Julia Michaels. "There's something really special about writing sexy, unapologetic pop songs with other women," she says.
"He Likes Boys"
"I've never been more afraid for a song to be out in the world," she says of the single. She calls it "possibly the realest, most honest song I've put out yet," and adds, "I love a sneaky half ballad half club banger." Her summary: "Ultimately, she's a song about unrequited love."
That last line is my favorite thing in the release. In my view, calling your own song "she" tells you how much she has lived with it.
