Kazi Approved: Tabby Wakes, Brooklyn’s Melodic Angel

Brooklyn breeds legends. Some of hip-hop’s biggest artists have come up from New York City’s most populous borough, including, but not limited to Biggie, Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, Lil Kim, and Joey Bada$$. Newcomer Tabby Wakes is rising through the ranks and demanding the attention of the entire city.

If you aren’t familiar with Tabby Wakes, she’s signed to one of Brooklyn’s most notorious labels, Fool’s Gold, responsible for Brockhampton and Kid Cudi, among others. She’s also flexing her passions as a member of the feminist skate collective Brujas.

Wakes appears to be quite introspective and on her first label-backed single, “Tabby Night,” she examines the good, the bad, and the ugly of the path to happiness. Specifically, it involves a lot of ugly until you really find out who you are. The seemingly feel-good track has a bubblegum vibe to it, yet if really look at the lyrics, as she explains, “they reveal a darker underside”. She goes into detail on NYLON, stating that “ the party lifestyle isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be; the rich and famous people we all look up to aren’t necessarily happy”.

On top of all that, Tabby is highly unique and she sets herself apart with a melodic, yet highly thought out sound. Her music is very enjoyable, but if you look closely at her lyrics, there’s so much more: she’s incredibly witty and intuitive. She’s continued to put this on display in her most recent single, “Angel.” The track showcases a slower, yet equally melodic, side of the songstress, reminiscing about old crushes. According to Fool’s Gold, she will be releasing an EP later this year.

Tabby Wakes has performed across the city, such as notable venues like MoMA PS1 in Queens. She’s an extremely versatile artist, giving a new voice to Brooklyn and the entire city. See for yourself, and let me know what you think below:
