Drill Music. An undeniable staple, not sub genre, of Hip-Hop. The past decade and change has introduced the world to the boisterous, brash, and unapologetically fiery scene that constitutes ‘Drill’. While it might have originated in Chicago, it’s hard to argue that New York, specifically the Bronx and Brooklyn, have kept it alive. One of the biggest faces in the scene is Bronx superstar Sha EK. We sit down to discuss his meteoric rise and the state of Drill.

In one word? Sha EK describes the Drill scene as ‘self expression.’ “It’s really as simple as that. We’re trying to get our life out on the songs.”

Sha EK

Born in 2003 in the South Bronx, Sha EK, born Chalim Perry, has ascended into a bonafide star before he can legally drink. In 2018 Sha’s journey to Bronx Hip-Hop royalty would embark. That same year, Sha would be shot. This event would act as a catalyst for a future creative spark.

Sha’s self-expression would lead to a unprecedented ascension. From 2020 to 2022, Sha’s influence on Drill would become global. In 2020, His single “D&D” would amass millions of streams. This eventually would culminate in a signing with Warner in September of 2022.

When asked if his process has changed through the years, Sha expounded. “It’s really simple, ya heard? If I’m feeling down, I’ll make a sad song… if I’m happy.. it’s a drill song.” While the response might appear innocuous, Sha’s career has been anything but that.

“Get ready. I mean, get READY for a whole new sound. I’m here.”

In 2023, Sha released multiple EP’s, singles, and has continued that run into 2024 with 2 new tracks, “Goin,” and “OYK.” If 2023 is any indicator, fans of the Bronx’s ‘King of Drill’ should be excited for a momentous 2024.
